SWOT Analysis On River Yangtze

Strengths:

• Asia's 1st longest river and World's 3rd longest river.
• Yangtze river cruises are becoming quite big tourist attractions.
• The 3 Gorges Dam on the Yangtze is one of the biggest hydro-electric power stations in the world.
• Half of China's ocean trade is carried over the Yangtze and its branches.
• The great gorges in the river's upper reaches above Yichang make it one of the world's most beautiful.
• Dams on the Yangtze help to control flooding.

Weaknesses:

• 361 species and sub-species that had been recorded and described from the basin out of these 177 species are endangered.
• The river is divided into 3 parts that is upper reaches, the middle reaches and the lower reaches. This study indicated that the "3 reaches" approach was not supported by fish "distribution pattern".
• Hydro-logical attractions are perhaps the largest threat to fish bio diversity in the Basin.
• The fish in upper reaches are in more danger by constructing the gorges dam, because the water becomes so cold that fish die by freezing.

Opportunities

• Many people live on the plains of the lower Yangtze where the soil is rich and good for farming in this area.
• Many people make a living by fishing in the Yangtze.
• Small boats carry people and products on the Yangtze. Large ships from the ocean also travel up past of the river.
• About half of China's ocean trade is carried over the Yangtze and its branches.
• The river is connected inland and coastal ports with major cities which give more job opportunities in port trust.

Threats

• Yangtze flooding killed many people that any water disaster recorded yet now                                     in - 1911:100000  ;  1931:145000 ; 1935:142000 and 1954:30000 dead
• In history records shows that in 1342 and in  1954 , the water of Yangtze River dried in Providence. and it was so dried that we can see the river bed
• Yangtze river is the world's most polluted river
• Yangtze river can be killed within 5 years because of its environmental pollution
• The water because of gorges dam it becomes so cool and as a result effects marine life.
